Is Insomnia Hereditary?

What Science Tells Us About Genetics, Sensitivity and Why Sleep Problems Often Run in Families



If you've ever searched whether insomnia is hereditary, you're certainly not alone. It's a question I hear regularly, and it's easy to understand why people ask it. Perhaps your mother struggled with sleep for years, your father always described himself as "a bad sleeper," or your grandmother relied on sleeping tablets for much of her adult life. After seeing the same pattern repeated across generations, it seems reasonable to wonder whether you've simply inherited insomnia and whether there's very little you can do to change it.


The encouraging news is that the answer isn't nearly as straightforward as it first appears.


Is Insomnia Passed Down Through Genes?


The simple answer is not in the way many people think.


Research over the past two decades has shown that genetics do play a role in how we sleep. Scientists have identified genes that influence our natural sleep-wake rhythm, how easily we wake during the night, and how reactive our nervous system is to stress. Some people naturally have lighter sleep than others, while some appear to recover more quickly after stressful periods.


However, researchers have not identified a single "insomnia gene" that determines whether someone will develop chronic insomnia. Instead, insomnia appears to develop through a combination of genetic predisposition, life experiences, health conditions, stress, personality, learned behaviours and nervous system regulation.


To me, that's one of the most hopeful things we know about insomnia.


Genes may influence our starting point, but they don't determine where we end up.


So Why Does Insomnia Seem To Run In Families?


This is where I think the conversation becomes much more interesting.


When people tell me that everyone in their family struggles with sleep, I'm often curious about something beyond genetics. Families don't just pass on DNA. They also pass on ways of responding to the world.


As children, we learn far more than we realise. We observe how our parents deal with stress, how emotions are expressed, whether difficult conversations are avoided, how conflict is managed, and whether rest is valued or seen as something that has to be earned. Long before we understand these things intellectually, our nervous system is quietly learning what feels safe and what doesn't.


Over time, those experiences shape the way we respond to stress, uncertainty and even bedtime itself.


What I Believe Is Often Inherited Is Sensitivity


One area that has fascinated me for many years is the research on highly sensitive people.


Psychologist Dr. Elaine Aron introduced the concept of Sensory Processing Sensitivity, describing a temperament found in approximately 15 to 20 percent of the population. People with this trait tend to process information more deeply, notice subtle changes in their environment, become overstimulated more easily and often experience emotions very intensely.


I see this very differently from many of my clients when they first arrive. Many describe themselves as "too sensitive," as though it's something they should overcome. I don't see it that way.


I see sensitivity as a beautifully designed nervous system that simply requires a different kind of care.


Nature Seems To Agree


One of the reasons I enjoy reading this research is because it reminds us that sensitivity isn't unique to humans.


Scientists have observed the same trait in well over one hundred animal species, including dogs, birds, horses, fish and primates. Interestingly, the percentage is remarkably similar. Around 15 to 20 percent of the group tends to be more observant, more cautious and more aware of subtle changes in the environment.


From an evolutionary perspective, this makes perfect sense. Every group benefits from having individuals who notice danger before everyone else does. Those more sensitive members are often the first to detect a predator, a change in weather or something unusual in the environment. Their awareness helps protect the rest of the group.


When I first learned this, it completely changed the way I thought about sensitivity.


Instead of seeing it as a weakness, I began seeing it as one of nature's oldest survival strategies.


Many of my clients experience a similar shift when they hear this. For the first time, they stop asking, "What's wrong with me?" and begin asking, "How do I look after a nervous system that's wired this way?"


I think that's a much more helpful question.


So Why Does Insomnia Seem To Run In Families?


This is where I think we need to broaden the conversation.


Families don't only pass on their genes. They also pass on ways of seeing the world, responding to stress and relating to emotions. From the day we're born, our nervous system is learning from the environment around us. We watch how the adults in our lives cope when things become difficult, whether emotions are talked about or pushed aside, whether people ask for help, whether home feels calm or unpredictable. Long before we understand these things consciously, our nervous system is quietly making sense of the world.


If you happen to have inherited a highly sensitive nervous system, those early experiences are often processed more deeply. That's not because you're weaker or more fragile than someone else. It's because your nervous system is designed to notice more. The same family experience can leave very different impressions on two children. One child may move through it with very little lasting effect, while another quietly absorbs every change in mood, every raised voice and every unspoken tension in the room.

This is why I think it's important not to compare childhoods. It's very easy to dismiss our own experiences because "nothing terrible happened." In fact, many people I meet genuinely describe their childhood as happy, and often it was. Loving parents can still have busy lives, experience stress, struggle with their own emotions or simply not know how to respond when a sensitive child is frightened or overwhelmed. That doesn't mean they were bad parents. It means they were human.


As children, we don't have the ability to change the environment we're growing up in, so we do something far more intelligent. We adapt. If being quiet reduces conflict, we become quiet. If looking after everyone else helps the family function, we become responsible. If staying alert helps us predict what might happen next, we become exceptionally observant. These adaptations are not flaws in our personality. They are creative solutions developed by a young nervous system trying to find safety in the only way it knows how.


The difficulty is that our nervous system doesn't automatically realise when life has changed. The child who learned to stay alert often becomes the adult whose mind won't switch off at night. The child who always felt responsible for everyone else may become the adult who lies awake solving tomorrow's problems before they've even happened. What once helped us cope can quietly become the very thing that keeps us awake.


So perhaps the better question isn't, "Did I inherit insomnia?"


Perhaps it's, "What did I inherit, and what did I learn?"


Because those are two very different things.


You may have inherited a beautifully sensitive nervous system. You may also have learned patterns that helped you navigate childhood but are no longer serving you today. The encouraging part is that while we can't change the nervous system we were born with, we can absolutely change the relationship we have with it. We can learn to understand it, work with it and give it what it has been asking for all along.


Where Do You Begin?



One of the first things I encourage people to do is stop trying to become less sensitive, stop trying to fit in. I don't believe that's the goal. Instead, begin learning what helps your nervous system recover. Highly sensitive people often need regular periods of quiet, time in nature, meaningful connection, movement, creativity or meditation, not because they are weak, but because their nervous system processes far more information throughout the day.


It can also be helpful to become curious about the patterns that seem to repeat in your life. Do you find yourself constantly taking responsibility for other people? Do you struggle to switch off because your mind is always planning ahead? Do you find it difficult to ask for help or to truly relax? Rather than seeing these as personality traits, try looking at them as adaptations. At one point in your life they probably made perfect sense. The question is whether they are still necessary today.


Finally, if you notice yourself lying awake tonight, see if you can ask yourself a different question. Instead of wondering why you can't sleep, ask yourself what your nervous system might need in this moment to feel just a little safer. Sometimes the answer is surprisingly simple. A slower breath. A warm shower. Reading instead of scrolling. A conversation you've been avoiding. Or perhaps simply reminding yourself that today is not the same as twenty years ago.

If insomnia has affected several generations of your family, I hope this article has given you something that many people never receive.

You may have inherited a sensitive nervous system. You may have learned ways of coping that made perfect sense when you were younger. You may even recognise patterns that have quietly travelled through your family for generations. But none of that means you inherited a future of sleepless nights.


One of the most remarkable things we know about the nervous system is that it continues to adapt throughout our lives. It learns from new experiences. It responds to safety. It changes. Which means your relationship with sleep can change too.
